The Sivananda International Yoga Vedanta Centre has been teaching yoga in Canada for the past sixty years. With nine ashrams, thirty centres and over 26,000 teachers, Sivananda Yoga is the world’s most widespread practice of traditional Hatha Yoga and Vedanta.
Founded by Swami Vishnudevananda in 1957, the yoga philosophy and practice is synthesised in five simple principles: proper exercise, proper diet, proper breathing, proper relaxation, positive thinking and meditation.
Out introductory class will emphasize twelve basic postures, three or more breathing practices, deep relaxation and brief periods of meditation. The class is suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners. The twelve postures are adapted to suit the needs of each practitioner.
In addition to the five principles of yoga, our class will explore the four paths of yoga: Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Raja Yoga. These are respectively; the path of action, the path of devotion, the path of knowledge, and the path of meditation.
